FEATURED: Backhouse Fragrances in the Daily Pilot
We're thrilled to share that Backhouse Fragrances has been featured in the Daily Pilot, in a piece by Matt Szabo tracing our move from a backyard studio in Newport Heights to a new home base in Costa Mesa.
Why the Daily Pilot Told Our Story
Backhouse Fragrances got its start in "the backhouse" — a converted garage steps from founder Danielle Whisenand's home, where every candle was hand-poured in small batches. A few weeks ago, the business moved into a 3,500-square-foot warehouse on the west side of Costa Mesa — more than ten times the size of the original studio, and now surrounded by a community of fellow entrepreneurs.
Room to Grow
The new space isn't just about square footage. It's what the extra room makes possible: more hand wash, which joined the lineup in 2023, plus diffusers on the way and new gift sets currently in the works — all while Backhouse keeps up with a growing slate of corporate gifting orders.
A Name for Every Chapter
Longtime fans know that Backhouse candles are named for places that matter to the family — from Lido Island to a street on Balboa Island Danielle once called home. It's one of the small details that makes each candle feel personal, and one the Daily Pilot took the time to notice.
Thank You
Special thank you to Matt Szabo and the Daily Pilot for the feature and to Allison Olmstead, for helping bring this story to life — and to everyone who has been a part of the Backhouse journey from the very beginning.
